21 st Century Ageless Society – where technology bridges the HEALTHCARE gap between the young and the old

Population ageing-the increasing share of older persons in the population-is poised to become one of the most significant social transformations of the twenty-first century, with implications for nearly all sectors of society, including labor and financial markets, the demand for goods and services, such as housing, transportation and social protection, as well as family structures and intergenerational ties.
In order to respond to the societal challenge of ageing, new methods and innovative approaches leveraging ICT are being developed and applied in addition to traditional policies to preserve quality of life and respect ageing in place decisions. Ageing is a combination of multiple determinants, where not only health but social, economic, cultural and physical environments intervene. The onset of conditions such as diabetes, vascular disease and dementia as people age are influenced by lifestyle related risks factors. This results in considerable negative consequences for elders’ quality of life.
The talk looks at the application and challenges of ICT (information & Communication Technologies) to this demographics and at the same time compares that with the phenomenal rise in the adoption of mobile technology by the Gora Datta, HL7 International Ambassador, is an accomplished, creative and visionary executive with over 33 years of international professional expertise in the field of Computer & Software Engineering and its application to Healthcare, eLearning & Social Protection. He is the US delegate to the ISO
Health Informatics committee TC 215 and a member of the “Application of ICT in Ageing in Communities” Task Force. He is designated by US Department of Health & Human Services as a Senior Health-IT Subject Matter Expert. He is also a ICT SME to the World Bank & Asian Development Bank. He serves in a number of positions within IEEE, including as Chair of the IEEE Orange County Section.
