Precision medicine, positioning satellites and turbo-charging the internet – all printed on a chip the size of your fingernail

We already use photonic technologies every day, our smartphones, the LED lights in our houses and particularly the internet are all powered by photonics. However, photonics is also crucial for precision sensing ranging from detecting single molecules that may help diagnose and treat diseases all the way to guiding self-driving cars, rockets, and satellites traveling at 11,000km/h.  My team is working on all of these applications and particularly exploring how really complex and high precision optical systems can be integrated onto a micro-chip size of your fingernail with the potential cost of only a few dollars. Integrated photonic technology is surprisingly adaptable and yet scalable to mass manufacture. In this lecture, I will show how this technology is also accessible to even quite small companies, right here in Australia and I will share my vision of building a technology manufacturing base to advance our position as global leaders not just in science and technology but also industrial commercialisation.

Speaker Biography

Dist. Prof. Arnan Mitchell – School of Engineering, RMIT University

Arnan Mitchell is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Engineering at RMIT University, Director of the RMIT Micro Nano Research Facility (MNRF), and leads the Integrated Photonics and Applications Centre (InPAC). He is a highly multidisciplinary researcher working in micro-chip technologies combining light, sound, fluids, and electronics with applications spanning radar systems for defense, high-speed fiber-optic communications, and point of care diagnostic systems for biomedicine. He is enthusiastic about translating technology into the hands of end-users and has dedicated much of his career to building and training diverse teams and comprehensive micro and nanotechnology infrastructure to enable breakthrough discoveries to achieve real-world impact.
