In July, so many exciting events happened.

  • On July 4th, the CIS Chapter hosted a technical talk on “Towards Robust Malware Detection” by Associate Professor Lorenzo Cavallaro from the School of Mathematics and Information Security at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. This talk was held at Federation University, Mt Helen campus. This talk addressed an endemic issue of inflated results on machine learning-based malware classification due to pervasive sources of experimental bias. 4 IEEE members attended the talk.
  • On July 12th, the CIS Chapter hosted a discussion forum on “Citations don’t measure the quality of research!” at Federation University, Mt Helen Campus. The event was streamed to the other campuses of FedUni in Berwick and Gippsland. A panel of presenters discussed their perspectives on citations as a measure of research quality, and if such measures are building bridges between researchers. The presenters were Prof. Fadi Charchar, A/Prof. Andrew Stranieri, and Dr. Alireza Jolfaei. The forum was open to all interested researchers including IEEE members and non-members. 23 people attended the discussion forum (6 IEEE members and 17 non-members).
  • On July 24th, the CIS Chapter hosted a research workshop on “Authorship: Learn about the research process, integrity and ethics in publishing”, which was held at Federation University Australia, Mt Helen Campus. The aim of this event was to inform researchers of some secrets of the trade in research collaborations and publishing. The event was streamed to the other campuses of FedUni located at Berwick and Churchill. 20 people attended the event in Mt Helen and 3 people attended from Berwick and Churchill. The workshop commenced with a welcoming and opening speech from the director of the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization, Associate Professor Alex Kruger. Mr. Alex Liu Yipeng from IEEE Singapore Section, gave an instrumental talk on authorship, integrity and ethical issues in publishing. The event was continued with an interesting panel discussion on the subject matter. The discussion panel was driven by Associate Professor Andrew Stranieri and the panel members were Associate Professor Andrew Stranieri, Dr. Mehmood Chadhar, and Mr. Alex Liu Yipeng. A number of sensitive questions in regards to authorship were asked by the participants, and the panel members endeavored to respond all questions. Lunch and refreshments were provided for all participants. During the lunch, Dr. Alireza Jolfaei encouraged FedUni students to join the FedUni IEEE student branch. The feedback received from participants was very positive.
